Literary Walk in Easy English:
Daughters of the Desert
Three English Ladies who shared one passion: travelling around the world.
Gertrude Bell, Mary Kingsely and Hester Stanhope.
They lived between 1776 and 1900, worked as writers, archaeologists, political officers, ethnographers, and one of them was possibly also a spy!
They travelled to Palestine and Lebanon, Syria and Mesopotamia, West and South Africa.
They changed the European perception of Africa, citicised the work of the missionaries, played a major role in establishing the modern state of Iraq, led British soldiers through the deserts of the Middle east, travelled alone and in the garb of a turkish male, led excavations in the north of Gaza......
If you would like to know who did what, when and where.... follow us on a trip through the lives of these fascinating women.
